Dream & Truth: Maya 3D Animation

The story is about whether the girl has fulfilled her dream or not. The girl doesn’t say a word but breathes in almost every shot, which symbolizes her disparate kinds of mood.

BUILD

The 3D Animation course, an academic-year course, I participated started from September 2019 to July 2020. During the fall semester in 2019, I modeled my first complete 3D character from scratch by following the illustration I designed in 2014. After that, I rigged the character to make it move and do some simple animations shown below. 3D rigging is the process of creating a skeleton for a 3D model so it can move. Most commonly, characters are rigged before they are animated because if a character model doesn’t have a rig, they can’t be deformed and moved around:

Exercise – Walk

Exercise – Grab

Exercise – Pose to Pose

For the next spring semester in 2020, in order to create a one-scene animation, firstly, I came up with my narrative and used handy tools such as sketch combined with some ready-made pictures to form a rough 2D animatic which is a preliminary version of a film, produced by shooting successive sections of a storyboard and adding a soundtrack:

2D Animatic

The story is about whether the girl has fulfilled her dream or not. The girl doesn’t say a word but breathes in almost every shot, which symbolizes her disparate kinds of mood. I then continued to model and texture other static items (including a guitar, the fragments of a broken guitar, a syringe, a rope, a spoon, a chair, a door, stage curtains, and a plastic bag with powder inside) and then animate the character with rough movements to test which shot is necessary and thus needs to be detailed later after finishing the 2D animatic. Before going deep into the keyframing part, I constructed a 3D blocking (or so-called stepped animation) which is an animation technique in which key poses are created to establish timing and placement of characters and props in a given scene or shot:

3D Blocking

Finally, after detailing the animating and modeling parts, I set up lights for emphasizing diverse atmospheres, designed the congratulation animation for the screen projection, and then exported the most time-consuming videos, which is called the rendering part. It took me around ten days to render this two-minute animation with the 1280 x 720 resolution. For the last step, I put all the rendered videos of shots together and edited their speed and sound effect to form the ultimate entire animation as shown in the top video.

TOOLS

  • Maya: modeling, rigging, animation, and rendering
  • Substance Painter: items and character texturing
  • Adobe Premiere: image sequence exporting
  • Final Cut Pro: video editing and compositing

GranpaDream: Unity3D + Vuforia Engine AR app

GrandpaDream” which is an augmented reality (AR) app helps elderly people play the piano even if they have never done so before. “GrandpaDream” utilizes a mobile phone or iPad camera, combined with the Vuforia Engine in Unity3D to recognize where, in real-time, to superimpose a 3D ball or dot on a piano key in order to play a melody. The user in the video played an old Taiwanese song from the 1970s, which was not only nostalgic for him but allowed him to have a new experience he had never had before, even at old age. This is a kind of technical creations that could benefit the elderly’s physical health.

DESIGN

During my four years at the Taipei National University of the Arts, I attended the Integrated Media Design class where students were asked to divide into groups to conduct a survey of elderly people about their regrets that came from not realizing a dream. Then each group had to collect information from the interview and identify key ideas to make a design that meets the elderly’s needs by using Unity3D combined with AR technology.

At first, we interviewed one of my classmates’ grandfather and heard him talk about his life experience. From his words, we knew that he had worked in YAMAHA and done some woodworking to make pianos for around ten years before his retirement. He let his children learn piano for the love of it although he had never learned it before because he came from a needy family in the 1960s. During that time, children had to work long hours to raise themselves instead of taking art classes. Until now, he has not received any training to play piano.

Figure 1. The diagram shows the key ideas we have selected from the interview.

After the interview, we discussed what we were going to design and used simple materials such as paper, markers and tape to create a prototype of the AR app. The idea was to make a live instruction app that could instruct people to play a melody in a short time without any understanding of music theory.

Figure 2. The animation of the prototype performs how “GrandpaDream” AR app would work.

Then I uploaded the actual piano keyboard image which I wanted for the AR app recognize in the real world to the Vuforia Developer Portal website to test whether this picture was augmentable or not. The piano picture shown in Figure 3. was rated four stars which meant that this perspective of the piano was easy to recognize.

Figure 3. Press “Play” button on the top right corner of the page to download GrandpaDream AR app. Then focus the mobile phone’s camera on this image and adjust perspective view until a blue dot appears on the screen of the smart phone as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4. The pictures in the first row indicate how the blue dot moves itself by recognizing the actual piano keyboard. Moreover, how does the APP act can be found in the second row.

Anxious: Maya 3D Particle Animation

In this animation, I want to express the restlessness in peace by building colorful box-shaped particles which transform themselves into different appearance slowly at the beginning of the film. Then blue and golden spheres are split up into fragments of paper to symbolize the escape from the comfort zone. In the middle of the video, there is a human figure running out suddenly in a dancing pose. However, it is gradually broken down into thousands of particles to depict my anxiety. By using Kinect to capture my skeleton and dancing poses, I then utilize Maya to combine the particles with skeleton to create the animation.

Fighting: Maya 3D Character Rigging Animation

In this project, in order to make an one-minute animation, I bound a mesh of a 3D character model to a rig to animate the character and imitated an action video clip I chose by keying every frame of their movement with the Maya software. A key frame is a point in time that contains many settings, such as size, position, and transparency.
